Here’s another wild tale from my time in Keflavik! Ok… the top picture is our 6th grade class in 1965. I am standing right next to Mr Rail in the Quonset hut. The pic below is just an outside photo of what Quonset hut classrooms looked like back in 1965 for grades K-6. Now for my story… We would go home for lunch every day. I think the kids from off base went to the base galley for lunch… not sure. Anyway my buddies David Hedges and Willard Watson and I were walking back to school after lunch. In the distance we saw a bunch of smoke coming up into the sky. We joked and said wouldn’t it be great if that was our classroom! Well as we got closer to campus…It was!!!! Oh man that was a wild situation! I remember our class being sent home that day. We were off from school the next day as well. Then came a dose of reality! Each class had their own Quonset hut. The first section was the classroom then came a bathroom section in the middle followed by a classroom sized area to mess around…do PE on cold days… listen to music…and just enjoy. Well we went back to school and we had to use the back fun section of the 5th grade Quonset hut as our classroom for the rest of the school year. So neither us nor the 5th graders had a fun section! The only positive thing was that it was near the end of the school year and we could go outside and mess around. I believe the fire was caused by some kind of electrical problem . The moral of this story is…Be careful what you wish for!!
