Rose Sowa
1914 – 2004
Rose Sowa was born in 1914 and raised in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. She attended Slippery Rock University and has a Master of Education degree from the University of Pittsburgh.
She taught in Pennsylvania, then at the University of Oregon at Eugene, and in Florida, where she directed the Miami Edison Cadette Corp for one year. Rose joined the Department of Defense Dependent Schools in 1950 and was assigned to Tokyo, Japan. She then went on to Germany, with assignments in Stuttgart, Aschaffenburg and Wiesbaden. Rose completed her career with the overseas schools at Clark AB in the Philippines in 1964. While in Tokyo in 1952, and in the Philippines in 1960, she organized and directed an International Play Day for girls.
Rose’s career then continued as an administrator in the Army Education Program in Korea, Okinawa, Madigan General Hospital in Tacoma, WA and MacDill AFB in Florida.
Rose is listed in THE WORLD WHO’S WHO of WOMEN, TWO THOUSAND WOMEN OF ACHIEVEMENT, THE INTERNATIONAL REGISTER OF PROFILES, and is a Charter Member of the American Overseas Schools Historical Society.
Rose is retired and resides in St. Petersburg, Florida.
