Richard Nell

Dick grew up in a small town in Maryland. He received his BS from Morgan State College and started his teaching career in Montgomery County, Maryland. After teaching there for four years he applied and was accepted into DoDDS in 1973. His first assignment was as a fourth grade teacher at Mercy Elementary School in Okinawa. While there, he met and married his wife, Judy, who also taught at Mercy ES.
In 1975 he and Judy transferred to Clark AB in the Philippines where Dick taught at Lily Hill Middle School for one year before transferring to George Cannon School, Midway Island. Upon the closing of Midway Island to dependents in 1978, they transferred to Alfred T. Mahan ES in Iceland. In 1981 they made their way to Germany, teaching one year in Buren, a small school in northern Germany, and three years at Sembach Middle School. In 1985, he and Judy returned to Okinawa where Dick taught at Stearley Heights ES, and finally at Kadena ES. They retired in June 2003. and settled in Henderson, Nevada. He now has more time for his interest in travel, photography, and antiques.
He has been a long time supporter of AOSHS and is a life member of Phi Delta Kappa and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.
