Dr. Joseph A. Mason, known as ‘Doc’ throughout DoDDS, was Superintendent of Schools in Skokie, Illinois, when selected as Director of 7135th School Group, USAFE Headquarters, Wiesbaden, Germany in July 1956. School Group was responsible for Air Force Dependents Schools, K-12, in Europe, Scandinavia, and the Middle East. After a break in Uganda, 1963-65, as Chief Education Advisor to AID, Doc returned to Europe as Director of the United States Dependents Schools, Europrean Area (USDESEA), responsible for Army, Navy, and Air Force Dependents Schools in Europe and surrounding countries, a position he held until his death in March 1979. Doc believed in the right of each school to develop its own personality based on its unique population and teaching talent. He was preceded in death by his first wife Margie, and second wife Sue Reese Mason. He is survived by three married children from his first marriage, Danny, Pat, and Suzie in Florida, and third wife Enrica ‘Ketty’? Mason in Nottingham, England.
