Dr. John L. Steele
1911-1994
From Johnsbury, Vermont, John received BA and MA degrees from Boston University, and a doctorate from Columbia. He served with the Army in Europe and Africa during World War II, and in the Korean conflict.
He taught high school in Vermont and Connecticut, was a student counselor at Boston and Harvard Universities, and associate dean of Springfield College. From 1957-63, he was Superintendent of Army Dependents Schools in Europe and North Africa. During his service with the schools he received many awards, including the Legion of Merit and the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal. He was highly regarded and respected by teachers, administrators, parents, the military, and foreign nationals during his tenure as superintendent.
He retired to Essex Junction, VT where his widow, Gwendolin, still resides
