Frances Callahan was born and raised in Lewiston, Maine. She received her BA in history from Seton Hill College and her Masters from Boston College.
Cal began her DoDDS career in 1953 when she sailed on a ship to Yoyogi, Japan. Her early assignments were in schools which are now closed: Merignac, France; Hahn, Germany; Laon, France; Bushey Hall, London, England; and Izmir, Turkey. Cal taught in Naples, Italy (Forrest Sherman MS) from 1969-1983 and in Kubasaki HS, Okinawa from 1983-1992.
Cal retired to Tampa, Florida where she and her cat, Nikko, held court. She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, playing bridge, volunteering for charitable causes, following Florida Democratic party politics, and telling a good story. To many, Cal was the true “Auntie Mame.” Her Irish wit, entertaining stories, and unique sense of humor made a day in Ms. Callahan’s classroom an unforgetable experience.
