FRANCES C. MURPHY

1923 – 1998

Frances Calhan Murphy was born in Estherville, Iowa (1923) and graduated from Drake University with baccalaureate and masters degrees. She taught in Iowa for a number of years. In 1950, she was married to Harold J. Murphy, who died just five years later.

As a young widow, Fran inquired with her Naval officer brother about American schools overseas. After he made contacts in her behalf, she started teaching with Department of Defense Overseas schools in 1965. Her assignments included: Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, Cuba, Rhein Main Air Force Base, Germany, Clark Air Base, Philippines, Karamursel, Turkey, and Japan. She taught various grade levels and subjects. School children enjoyed her practical approach to education and learning. Parents respected her sound judgment and teaching techniques. She retired from DoDDS and taught for two more years in Iowa, giving her 45 years in the classroom. In 1998 she died in Stillwater, MN at the age of 74.

Fran had a distinctive splotch of gray at her forehead amidst her head of black hair. She was known for her wisdom, generosity, warmth, loyalty, and no-nonsense approach to life and teaching. Friends remember her sage advice, love of travelling, homemade gifts, and love of life. By her existence, the world became a better place.
