Tom and Dick were both born in Fort Jay on Governor’s Island, New York.
Their father, Army Major Smothers, was captured in the Philippines in World War II. He survived the Bataan Death March but died on his way to Japan.
The duo was popular during the 1960s and had their own show for three years.
