Incirlik Unit School History

Opened: 2008
Closed: 2016

In 2008, the elementary and high schools were combined and became Incirlik Unit School. The school had separate programs for elementary, middle, and high school students as well as events for all students.

For the 2009-10 school year the principal was Raymond Eddings, and the vice principal was Lucille Sutherland. There were 425 students in the school, 82 in grades nine through twelve, 95 in grades six through eight, and 248 in Sure Start through fifth grade.

The sports program at the Unit School included intramurals for the middle school, girls’ volleyball, boys’ wrestling and soccer, basketball for boys and girls, and cheerleading. Additional activities included Ping Pong Club, Robotics Club, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society, and National Junior Honor Society. Special programs for the upper grades included Red Ribbon Week and Breast Cancer Awareness. The high school also did several community-service projects. Clubs for the elementary students included an Art Club, Homework Club, Running Club, Yu-Gi-Oh Pokemon and Bakugon Club, Robotic Club, and Gymnastics Club. The elementary students also participated in Math Olympiads.

Ms. Terry Green and Ms. Yolanda Washington were the administrators for the 2009-10 school year. There were 500 students in grades Sure Start through twelve with only nine seniors and seventy first graders. The drama club continued their Dessert and Drama evenings. New activities included Cooking with Books and participation in the European publication Showcase. There were over seventy faculty and staff which enabled the school to have small class sizes.

Sports were affected by increased security measures and most sports teams had practice games and played base teams when available. The high school teams were able to participate in district tournaments. Life at the base was affected by the political occurrences, and everyone was confined to the base periodically.

For the 2011-2012 school year, the music program had its first Jazz Band, and Video Production was added to the activities. The next school year some elementary students became Peace Ambassadors to find peaceful solutions to student conflicts. Ms. Alice Berard was the principal for the 2012-13 school year, and Ms. Yolanda Harvin became the assistant principal for the 2013-14 school year. The next school year the assistant principal was Kim Bertola. The high school students also had a Culinary Arts program for the first time. The school enrollment had dropped to less than 375 students.

The school was closed at the end of the 2015-16 school year.
