Naples ES #2 (a.k.a. Pinetimare ES) History

Opened: 1982
Closed: 1997

Naples Elementary School at Pinetamare was located approximately seventeen miles north of Naples, Italy, in the coastal resort of Villaggio Coppola Pinetamare.

For the 1981-82 school year all the elementary students in Naples were combined in the school complex at Pinetamare. The facility was a two-story building only a few yards from the Tyrrhenian Sea. The building housed thirty-one classrooms and twelve specialist rooms. A large multipurpose room was used as a cafeteria and for school assemblies and productions. A navy exchange cafeteria was operated from 1030 until 2200 hours in a small portion of the multipurpose room. Grades one through six utilized a large playground featuring a blacktopped area, a large sand area with playground equipment, and a large grass field. The two kindergarten classes were provided with a separate playground featuring a blacktop area and a grassed area. That school year the school had a staff of forty-seven stateside teachers, three host nation teachers and six educational aides. There were 900 students in grades Kindergarten through six.

The staffing for the school remained constant for the remainder of the eighties; however, the school enrollment dropped to 715 students in grades kindergarten through six for the 1988-89 school year. The next year the enrollment increased to 835 students.

By the 1993-94 school year the enrollment was 860 students. The staff had increased to fifty American teachers, two host nation teachers and eight educational aides. The school now had an Early Childhood Development Center that provided diagnostic and remedial services for children ages three through seven who ranged from mildly developmentally delayed to severely handicapped. The AFSEC Team assisted with medically related services for students on an I.E.P. The school now had computers and a large quantity of software. Students were involved in additional enrichment activities such as chorus, art club, computer club, student council, gymnastics and a hobbies and talents club.

By the 1994-95 school year the school had one networked computer lab and one standalone lab, with a large quantity of software. The staff now consisted of fifty-nine American teachers, two host nation teachers and nine educational aides.

The school was closed at the end of the 1996-97 school year when the new Naples schools were opened at the Naples U.S. Naval Support Activity base (NSA Support Site) near Gricignano di Aversa, Italy.
