Naples ES (formerly ES #1 and Forrest Sherman ES at Via Magioni. Now at Gricignano.) History

Opened: 1952
OPEN

The original elementary school in Naples was located at Via Mangioni. The school was opened in 1952 and had grades one through six. In the early fifties, the elementary school was renamed Forest Sherman Elementary School. In 1982, all the students who attended the elementary schools in Naples were consolidated into one school at Pinetamare.

In 1997, a new building was opened at the Naples US Naval Support Activity base (NSA Support Site) near Gricignano di Aversa, Italy. The official ribbon cutting ceremony was on October 6, 1997. The first principal at the new school was Susan Cothran, and the assistant principals were Gary Edsell and Nancy Cotter. There were 975 students in Sure Start through sixth grade with a faculty and staff of over sixty. The students participated in district and regional events such a Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, the D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) Program, and Art Reflections. Several afterschool activities were provided for students including student council, a drama club, and a school choir.

The school was referred to as the home of the Dolphins, the school mascot.

Since opening, the building has undergone numerous facility upgrades and renovations. The base is 118 miles south of Rome, the largest city in Italy. The Naples Elementary School student body is currently comprised of dependent children whose family members provide support to the visiting and home-ported Sixth Fleet Units, the Allied Force Command Naples, and shore-based personnel in the Naples and Gaeta Area.

The school is currently open.
