American Forces Dependent HS, Naples History

Opened: 1951
Closed: 1952

The original school for Naples High School students was formed when a new NATO southern command—Headquarters Allied Forces, Southern Europe (AFSOUTH)—was established in Naples, Italy, in the summer of 1951. With American high school students arriving in the command, a small school facility was set up in October 1951. The first school had seven to eight students and was located in a spare storage room in the Hotel Britannique in downtown Naples. Many American families lived in this area of Naples. The school program functioned through University of Nebraska high school correspondent courses.

During the summer and autumn of 1951, more students arrived and the school was relocated to Albergo Sant’Elmo which was the NATO Officers’ Club in the Vomero section of Naples. The school of fifteen to eighteen students operated until August of 1952. High school proctors during this time were Mr. Albert Trimarchi and Mr. Bob Newton. The first graduate of the school was Stewart A. Ring.

In October 1952, a standard Department of Defense School was opened in the same location.
