Brindisi JHS/HS (combined ES/HS 1992-94) History

Opened: 1973
Closed: 1994

Brindisi Junior High School/High School was located on San Vito dei Normanni Air Station in southern Italy about six miles from the village of San Vito dei Normanni. The nearest large town was Brindisi, which was on the heel of the Italian peninsula. The school was located in a facility that was built as a school. The high school had twenty classrooms and a Media Center. The elementary and high school shared a gymnasium and a multipurpose room.

A DoD school was first established at San Vito dei Normanni Air Station in 1961.

In the 1981-82 school year there were 200 students in grades seven through twelve and a professional staff of eighteen. The school was North Central Association (NCA) accredited, and resource personnel included music, physical education, health, reading, learning development, speech, and a counselor.

During the 1987-88 school year the high school had twenty classrooms. A facility improvement plan had been completed during the last two years that had added a business lab, art room, and an expanded library. Most of the commercial walkways had also been covered. By the 1989-90 school year there were 167 students in the high school.

For the final year of the school, there were 145 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through twelve.

The Brindisi Centurion Association (BCA) was established in 1994 to connect students who attended Brindisi American High School from 1966 until its closure in 1994. The first BHS/BCA reunion was in 1997 and the 10th and final reunion in 2025. The BCA will continue to spread the Centurion spirit. Amici Per Sempre.
