Avellino ES History

Opened: 1979
Closed: 1993

Avellino Elementary School was located near the city limits of Avellino, Italy about thirty-two miles from Naples.

The school was a one-story masonry structure, completed in 1980. The building housed the school and the community center. A kitchen and a multipurpose room in the center were utilized for lunch and other school activities during the day.

For the 1981-82 school year, the school had a principal with full-time teaching duties, two classroom teachers, a local host nation teacher/librarian/clerk and an educational aide. There were forty pupils enrolled in grades kindergarten through eight. There were three multi–grade level classrooms with each teacher providing full instruction in general education. The local national staff member provided instruction in the host nation language and culture. The educational aide provided service to all teachers. Specialists in physical education, art, and music came from Naples one day per month.

By the 1987-88 school year the enrollment had decreased to twenty-eight students in grades kindergarten through eight. The staffing now included a full-time teaching principal, one classroom teacher, a local national teacher/librarian/clerk and an educational aide. There were two multigrade classrooms.
