Vari Elementary School was one of the two facilities that made up Athens Elementary School. It was about eight miles from the American Air Base. In the 1981-82 school year there were approximately 380 students in kindergarten and grades three through six. Between the two schools there were twenty-one classroom teachers and the following specialists: art, librarian, counselor, learning disabilities teacher, mildly handicapped teacher, speech therapist, psychologist, and reading improvement. Additionally, there was a school nurse, two host nation teachers, a psychologist, and a speech therapist.
The sixth grade at Vari was partly departmentalized. There was also some cooperative learning and grade level grouping for reading. The school underwent NCA Evaluation for school year 1980-81 and was recommended for full accreditation.
For the 1987-88 school year there were approximately 370 students enrolled at Vari and both the fifth and sixth grade were departmentalized. The next year the enrollment had fallen to 350 students.
The school was closed in 1991.
