Würzburg ES (ES/MS 2007-08) History

The Leighton Barracks housing area for the Wuerzburg Community was located on the eastern hilltop above the city of Wuerzburg, approximately 1 ½ miles from downtown Wuerzburg. The elementary school was a twenty-seven-classroom building that included a learning resource center, combination gymnasium/auditorium, a teachers’ lounge, parent conference room, administrative offices, and specialists’ classrooms.

Delia E. Alpert was the principal for the 1954-55 school year, and there were 381 students enrolled in the Dependents School.

In 1981-82 the resource educators included a health educator, counselor, speech therapist, reading improvement specialist, special education teachers, art teacher, music teacher, two host nation teachers, and a resource specialist. The school had an enrollment of 900 students in grades kindergarten through six. Some preschool child find services were provided. The staff included forty-one teachers.

The enrollment for the 1987-88 school year was 1,075 students in grades kindergarten through six. By the 1989-90 school year, there were 1,450 students in grades kindergarten through six. When Wuerzberg Middle School opened in 1990, the six grade was transferred to the new school.

By the mid-nineties, due to the troop drawdown in Germany, Wuerzburg Elementary School had 920 students in grades kindergarten through five.

The last year of the school the elementary and middle school were combined into one facility.
