Wildflecken ES/MS History

Opened: 1954
Closed: 1994

Wildflecken American Elementary School was situated on a hill in the Rhoen Mountains near the military training area. The school was housed in two areas, one mile apart. One building was in a post housing area. This building had five classrooms. The rest of the classrooms, learning resource center, office, etc. were in connected and converted stone stables at the top of the hill.

The principal when the school opened was Catherine Brady and there were 73 students enrolled.

By the end of the seventies there were about 350 students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

For the 1981-82 school year, there were seventeen teachers on the staff for the 375 pupils in grades kindergarten through six.

In 1986, the seventh and eighth grade returned to the school, and the school was now called Wildflecken Elementary/Middle School. The ninth through twelfth graders went to Fulda High School. The enrollment through the later part of the eighties ranged from 530 to 625 students in grades kindergarten through eight. For the 1987-88 school year, there were twenty-four classroom teachers and a full complement of specialists. The next year, grades six through eight used the middle school concept. The faculty included forty teachers and twelve support staff.

The enrollment began to decrease in the nineties. The number of students decreased from just over 600 to about 250 in the last year, 1993-94.
