Kerpen American Elementary School was in the town of Horrem, ten minutes from Kerpen, which is fifteen miles west of Cologne. The school was in two buildings. One was built in 1920, the other in 1950. Both were originally constructed as schools. There were four classrooms, a supply room, and a small office which doubled as a teacher lounge and workroom.

Through the eighties there were four teachers, a teaching principal, a host nation teacher, a part-time aide, and a part-time administrative clerk. There were eighty-five pupils in grades kindergarten through six.
