Kitzingen ES (formerly ES/JHS) History

Opened: 1947
Closed: 2006

Kitzingen American Dependent School was opened in 1947. The principal for the 1954-55 school year was Maryann L. Bellman, and there were 270 students in grades kindergarten through eight. The original school was located in the building that later became the school annex.

Kitzingen Dependent School, which became Kitzingen American Elementary/Junior High School, was in the Marshall Heights military housing area and consisted of a main building and an annex. The two buildings were less than a half-mile apart. The school had grades kindergarten through eight.

For the 1981-82 school year, the main building accommodated an overflow of two third-grade classes while primarily housing intermediate and junior high students. The annex housed the kindergarten and primary grades. There were approximately 850 students, twenty-five classroom teachers, and teacher specialists for art, music, reading improvement, host nation, special education, and a school nurse. The faculty totaled forty-one.

By the late eighties, the kindergarten was in a leased German school about four kilometers from the main buildings. The enrollment remained stable through the ’80s. Other classes were held in a second leased school and on the military base.

The cafeteria, which was located in the annex, was used by the annex and the main school. The school gymnasium was in the main building.

For the 1993-94 school year, the school became Kitzingen Elementary School and had grades kindergarten through four. Grades five through six attended Kitzingen Intermediate School. There were 600 students in the elementary school. During the nineties, all the elementary students were in the main building and the annex. The main building housed grades kindergarten, two, three, and four. The annex had grades one and two. The school enrollment was approximately 700 students.

For the 2004-05 school year, the Kitzingen American Elementary school was divided into two schools. The elementary school was located in two buildings that were about a half-mile apart. It was complicated to administer the buildings as one school. Building 350, which was near the B8 highway in the Marshall Heights housing area, would remain as Kitzingen Elementary School and would house grades kindergarten through second grade. The principal for the new primary school was David Markowitz.

The school was closed at the end of the 2005-06 school year.
