Atterberry ES (formerly Frankfurt ES #2) History

Atterberry Elementary School was originally known as Frankfurt American Elementary School #2. The school was located on Atterberry Kaserne near the American 97th General Hospital in Frankfurt, Germany. There were approximately fifty-four classrooms which were in eight different buildings in a seven-acre area. Hot lunches were available in the cafeteria which served three lunch shifts each day. The cafeteria was in the main building and seated approximately three hundred students. The main building also had a gymnasium/auditorium.

The first principal for the school was Gladys Schmandt, and there were 300 students enrolled in grades K–8.

There were specialists for reading improvement, speech therapy, music, art, and physical education. A full-time school nurse was located at the school. The Special Education Department, which was the largest in the DoDDS system in the early eighties, had special education classes for hearing impaired, preschool developmentally handicapped, physically handicapped, educable mentally handicapped, and those with learning disabilities. Pupil Personnel services were provided by two counselors, a social worker, and a school psychologist. The school had a Host Nation Department that provided rich and rewarding experiences pertaining to the German language and culture. The school’s Learning Resource Center had a full-time librarian and a Library Clerk. The school also had fifteen educational aides.

By the 1987-88 school year, the school had two full-time librarians and a media technician. There were now twenty educational aides at the school. The staff had ninety-five employees, including three administrators, five kindergarten teachers, thirty-two elementary classroom teachers, and numerous specialists. There were approximately 1,200 students in grades kindergarten through six. By the 1989-90 school year, a pre-school handicapped program was added.

For the 1995-95 school year, the school population was 510 students in grades K–5. There were twenty-three classrooms located in three different buildings.

The school closed at the end of the 1994-95 school year. There were seventy-five employees on the staff, including two administrators, a counselor, a school nurse, and twenty-two classroom teachers.
