Darmstadt MS (formerly JHS) History

The Darmstadt Junior High School building was located in the military housing area of Lincoln Village. Prior to the 1983-84 school year the school was part of the Darmstadt American School that had grades kindergarten through nine. When the schools were separated, grades five through eight went to the middle school, and the ninth grade was bused to Frankfurt High School. The first principal for the school was Dan Basarich, and his assistant the first year was Robert Kethcart and the second year was Dr. Elizabeth Walker. The principal for the 1985-86 school year was Ms. Steinkuehler, and Dr. Walker continued as assistant principal.

There were twenty-two classrooms, a gymnasium/auditorium, media center, counseling/health offices, and administrative offices. For the 1987-88 school year the school staff consisted of a principal, an assistant principal, fifteen classroom teachers, four administrative support staff, five specialists (reading improvement, counselor, nurse, learning improvement, and media), seven shared specialists (talented and gifted, social worker, occupational therapist, and teacher for emotionally impaired), and a host nation teacher. There were 345 students in grades six through nine when the junior high was separated from the elementary school.

By the 1989-90 school year there were over 375 students in grades six through nine. There were twenty-three classrooms in the main building and five classrooms in the annex. The faculty and staff numbered forty-four, including two outdoor education teachers and two administrators.

By the early nineties, the school enrollment had dropped to under 300 students. For the 1994-95 school year the school now had grades six through eight. There were approximately 200 students. The school had twenty-nine classrooms. The faculty included six specialists and six shared specialists.

Darmstadt Middle School closed at the end of the 2005-06 school year.
