Buechel American Elementary was located near the German town of Cochem on the Mosel River about thirty miles from Hahn Air Base. The school was opened in 1972. Mr. Gerry Schiele served as the teaching principal for several years.
The school was a modern building of German construction located in the small community of Kennfus which was eight miles from the base and twelve miles from the housing area. There were four large classrooms, a small media center, and a large play area. For the 1981-82 school year the staff consisted of a teaching principal, two teachers, a part-time aide, and clerical personnel for the school office/library and supply office. The enrollment fluctuated between twenty-five and forty students in kindergarten through sixth grade.
The school was closed in 1995.
