Daegu HS History

Opened: 2011
Closed: 2017

Daegu High School was originally part of Daegu American School. The high school became a separate school for the 2011-12 school year. The first principal was Kristopher Kunatek, and he served as principal for three years. His assistants were Carole Osman (2011–2012) and Kim Snow (2012–2014). Altorn Grade became the principal for the 2014-15 school year with Teresa Hahn as the assistant principal. They both remained at the school until the 2020-21 school year.

The school mascot was the Warrior, and the school colors were green, black, and white. The school newspaper was Warrior Beat. The student enrollment the first year was 200 students including forty-two seniors who had the honor of being the first students to graduate from Daegu High School. The school enrollment averaged 180 students in grades nine through twelve.

The high school continued to offer many of the programs that had been started at Daegu American School and added more sports opportunities. When the high school became a separate school, clubs for chess, journalism, drumline, and fashion were offered. Students also participated in the arts with programs in chorus, band, and drama. The video production club produced programs for the school and for the local American Forces Network (AFN) station. Other programs at the school included Student Council Association, Model United Nations, Renaissance Club, and JROTC. The JROTC program was started at Daegu American school twenty-six year ago at the school located at Camp Walker. With the new high school, the program was again located at Camp Walker.

The high school had a full complement of sports including football, cheerleading, tennis, volleyball, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball, soccer, and track. There were junior varsity teams for volleyball and basketball. The girls’ basketball team were undefeated in their conference in 2012 and were the Far East Division II champions. The following year the girls’ volleyball team won the Korean–American Interscholastic Activities Conference (KAIAC) championships and the boys basketball won their first KAIAC title since 1988. The 2013-14 school year was a banner year for athletics—the school won nine championships. These included girls’ volleyball conference, tournament, and Division II Far East championships; girls’ basketball conference and tournament play championships; and boys’ basketball honors in the Far East tournament and championship. The school’s football team was the DoDDS Korea Champions. In 2015, the football team became the first three-time champions in DoDDS Pacific history.

After the 2016-17 school year, Daegu High School became Daegu Middle/High School when grades six through eight were added to the school for the 2017-2018 school year.
