Mercy Elementary School was opened in 1963. The school derived its name from the fact that until 1961 the structure had housed an Army hospital by that name. A new hospital was built at Camp Kue near Kadena Air Base. The old hospital facility which consisted of forty Quonset huts was then turned over to dependents schools. Over a thousand students in grades one through six were enrolled the first year of operation. By 1971-2 the school had students in grades one through five.
