Paul F. Von Hendy

August 1, 1945 - July 1, 2004

Paul passed away in the Azores on July 2, 2004, just after transferring there from Germany. A much loved math teacher and cross-country coach who always ran with his team at Stuttgart High School, he will be very much missed. But Stuttgart High School was neither the beginning nor the end of his teaching career.

Paul was born August 20, 1945, and raised in Elmira, NY, graduating from Southside High School in 1963. He earned his math degree from Cortland University in 1967 and in 1970, after three years teaching in the U.S., joined the DoDDS family in Japan. In 1973, he transferred to Bad Hersfeld, Germany, where he taught 4th grade for a year. Then in 1974, it was on to La Maddalena, Sardinia, where a school had just opened. From 1975 – 1992, Paul in all three of the schools at Pattonville – elementary, middle, and high school. Paul taught in Stuttgart High School until it closed in 1992.

It was in Stuttgart that he married his life’s partner, Jutta, in 1978, and had his two children; Vanessa in 1979 and Stefan in 1983, both of whom were raised in DoDDS schools.

With the closure of Stuttgart, Paul was transferred to Bad Aibling, until it too closed in 2004. While there, he became the computer teacher for grades K – 12 and a computer educational trainer for teachers in addition to his coaching activities. As cross country coach, NEA Area Representative, and Computer guru, Paul made a name for himself as a warm, loving, and helpful teacher and an indispensable colleague.

Paul was recognized in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers in the 2003-2004 edition,but his greatest recognition will always be in the hearts of teachers and students whose lives he affected indelibly.
