Matilda “Tillie” Kuzara
1917-2000

Tillie was born in Roundup, Montana. She graduated from Klein High School in 1935 and attended Eastern Montana Normal School in Billings. She spent several years teaching at country schools in Roundup, Chester and Broadview.

Tillie entered the Womens Army Corps (WAC) on September 14, 1943. She was a Sergeant Administrative Specialist A.A.F., which entailed duties in the administrative office of the Adjutant General, World Headquarters at Wright Field, Ohio. She was honorably discharged with merits on February 15, 1946.

Tillie taught high school in Moscow, Idaho and took summer courses at Missoula, graduating with a BA degree from the University of Montana. She taught at LaPlata, Maryland and took courses at Columbia University, graduating with a MA in 1952. Her majors were biological, political and social sciences.

Tillie taught in overseas schools from 1954 until her retirement on June 22, 1977. Her assignments included Drake Junior High and Narimasu High School in Tokyo; Paris American High School; Warsaw Embassy School; Nürnberg High School and Frankfurt High School, Germany; and SHAPE American High School in Belgium.

Tillie traveled widely during her overseas teaching career and avidly absorbed the culture and languages of the places she lived. Upon her retirement, she moved to Lewistown, Montana.
