Lois Elizabeth Doll
1927-1999

Lois Elizabeth Doll was born in Larned, Kansas on July 8, 1927 and died August 6, 1999 as a result of a bicycle accident.

After two years of college at the age of nineteen, and at an annual salary of $1800, Lois became an educator in Garden City, Kansas. After a year, she went back to college, working as an inspector at an aircraft factory, and, lastly, as a salesperson promoting silverware and encyclopedias before obtaining her bachelor’s degree from Wichita State. An educator once more, she was employed in Wichita, and then moved on to Bellflower, California.

Beginning in 1958, her DoDDS career took her to England, Germany and Japan as an elementary teacher. Returning to Germany, she acquired her master’s degree from the University of Southern California, and became a media specialist for her last fourteen years in Bad Kreuznach, Germany.

A long-time supporter and leader of the Overseas Education Association, she became chairperson of OEA’s Area IX (Kaiserslautern area) in 1968. In the ’70’s, her photograph appeared often in issues of the OEA Journal due to her active work with that organization. One such photo shows a proud moment in Lois’ career as Dr. Cecil Driver presented her with the “Willard Givens Award” (NEA’s recognitiion of outstanding contributions to the Association) at the NEA convention in Portland, Oregon.

After 32 years of DoDDS service, she retired in 1991 to Leisure World in Seal Beach, California where she sang in her church choir and served in the vestry. In addition, she became president of the 200-member Eastern Star Club, vice president of the Lady Lion’s Club, and assumed the presidency of a 450-member Women’s Club. Youthful in manner, she and the daughters of her good friend, Anne Wynne, camped overnight to secure a good view of the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day!

Our overseas schools were blessed with numerous outstanding teachers, one being Lois Doll.
