EDWARD W. MANTEL
1943 – 2001

Ed Mantel was born April 24, 1943, in Townsend, Montana, to Josephine and John Mantel. When Ed was eight, his family moved to Helena where he graduated from Helena High School in 1961. Ed received his BA from Wheaton College (Illinois) in 1964, then completed a year of graduate work at Roosevelt University, Chicago, IL. Ed loved Chicago and remained there to teach English and social studies at Harrison High School. After five years in Chicago, Ed joined DoDDS in 1970 with a teaching assignment in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. In the fall of 1972, Ed transferred to the social studies department at Nurnberg High School. There he met Mary Gaige, a counselor at Nurnberg High School. They were married on April 24, 1973, in Mary’s hometown, Sylvania, Ohio. Ed completed his MS with the University of Arizona (1973) and his D.ED. with the University of California (1979). He moved into administration as an EPM at Nurnberg High School in 1983 and then at Osterholz High School from 1985 to 1988. His last assignment as principal of Illesheim Elementary/Middle School was a special joy for him.

Ed and Mary had two sons: Mark, born in 1976, and Michael in 1978. He was a loving and involved father who found great joy in his sons and was very proud of them. Ed was medically retired in January of 1998 and died August 28, 2001, of complications from myelofibrosis and acute myelogenous leukemia (AML). Ed will be remembers for his care and concern for everyone, his wit and ready laugh, his ability to listen, and his wisdom.
