Schwaebisch Gmuend American Elementary School was located forty miles west of Stuttgart in the heart of the Schwaebische Alb (hills). The American Elementary School was situated on the rim of a high hill overlooking the city of Gmuend. The main structure of the school was opened in 1954, with eight classrooms, a gymnasium/multipurpose room, and administrative offices. The first principal was Peter Carpenter, and there were 155 students enrolled in kindergarten through eighth grade.

An addition with four new classrooms and a media center was completed in 1976, and construction of a second addition with two classrooms and a media center was completed in January 1982.

For the 1981-82 school year, there were twelve classroom teachers, a learning development teacher, and an intercultural teacher. Other itinerant staff included a counselor, speech and language pathologist, and a music teacher who served the school twice a week. A social worker and psychologist from Stuttgart visited periodically to assist with children with special needs. There were 300 students enrolled in grades kindergarten through eight.

By the late eighties the enrollment was almost 500 students in grades kindergarten through eight. The school was closed in June 1991.
